An Old World Finish that Shines Today

For hundreds of years artisans in the Mediterranean region, in Italy, Spain, and Greece, have been beautifying interior and exterior walls with a dazzling finish that has come to be called Venetian plaster, what the Italians call “Veneciano,” after the city in which it originated.

Finish

Venetian Plaster has the look and texture of aged, polished alabaster or lightly grained marble. The polished surface catches the eye with subtle changes of color and hue. By changing the application technique, the artisan can create a variety of different effects and moods. Depending on the color chosen, the finish will emerge with a translucent or opaque quality rendering a humble wall a masterpiece of design.

Venetian plaster is appealing because the finish is so unique and complex. It can be highly polished with a clear and sharp look or more subtle, with an almost blurred effect. Each craftsman develops his or her own style, and the finish they apply reflects that. It is available in more than 25 colors, some of them custom-made.

The Application

The look of Veneciano is achieved with great diligence and skill. After careful preparation of the surface to correct abnormalities, the initial coat of the medium takes place. The surface, once dry, is hand-sanded. Second and third coats are applied until the texture and coloration designs are achieved. Once dry, the artisan will correct any flaws, then buff and polish the surface. The surface undergoes a magical transformation.
